Amherst College Republicans Vice President Rob Barasch told a debate audience on Wednesday that his club believes in climate change.
The debate was part of a series of debates put on during the Climate Camp, a three-day event supporting divestment from fossil fuels and private prisons. Barasch was representing the Republican viewpoint in a debate over whether divestment is a moral imperative and strategic priority, arguing against divestment.
“I know I speak for all members of my group when I say we believe climate change is real,” Barasch said during his introductory speech.
This is a significant change for the club, which brought climate change denier Patrick Moore to campus in October 2014 and in 2016 publicly celebrated the election of Donald Trump, who has said climate change is a hoax perpetrated by China.
In light of these fruitful debates, we at AC Voice welcome further dialogue on these issues.
