Have you seen…

…Janelle Monae’s new music video Cold War?! Okay, so it’s not that new, but it has to be one of my favorite music videos of all time, not just because Janelle Monae is so generally bad-ass, but also because she’s breaking a lot of “video taboos” here. She manages to keep the viewer interested (better than most musicians today) in JUST ONE TAKE. That’s right, the camera doesn’t break once. BOOM. That’s amazing–I can’t even imagine all the acting powers compacted into that tiny body of her’s. If you look at most music videos, they’re filled with costume changes, 2 second video clips, and constant action, booty-grabbing, etc. just to make sure we don’t flip the channel. Monae on the other hand, takes a risk with this video, presenting her audience with (literal) naked self. The close shot, going in and out of focus, one take to prove her tears are REAL show us that this song is real to her too. In the day and age where few artists write their own lyrics, this woman stands out as someone who wants to relate to her audience in a new way. For that I want to extend to Miss Monae double high-fives. She’s pretty awesome to say the least….and if you like this she’s coming to Smith College April 28th and you can check her out for über-cheap! :)

NOT TO MENTION, she’s a pretty fabulous lady herself.  If I may, I would recommend a quick google search of her name just to check out her style. She doesn’t seem to relax her hair, but always has it in the most awesome faux-hawk! It’s got a nice retro-look especially when paired with her exquisitely detailed tuxedo suits (she’s never seen without one). All in all, a pretty inspiring girl, who definitely has a vision about her music and look. Her newest album “Archandroid” takes inspiration from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis–a controversial film of the Weimar Era in Germany. Check her out, she won’t disappoint, at the very least you won’t see another pop-star quite like her! :)
